GCA Graduate - Mel Green

From Door-to-Door Salesman to Pharmacy Tech Graduate: Meet Mel

Meet Mel Green, a resilient individual who recently achieved a remarkable personal milestone -- transitioning from a door-to-door salesman to a promising career in healthcare thanks to the Good Careers Academy at Goodwill San Antonio.

Mel's journey is one of perseverance and dedication. Just a few months ago, he found himself knocking on doors, selling pet grooming services. Yet, despite the challenges, he never lost sight of his aspirations to work in the medical field.

“I was really interested in the medical field,” Mel said. “I just felt like I wanted to serve the community while doing something I love.”

At 27, Mel first heard about the Good Careers Academy through a friend. Offering free accredited career training, the Academy at Goodwill San Antonio is dedicated to empowering individuals to acquire new skills.

After recognizing the potential for growth in the healthcare sector he decided to embark on a new path and enrolled in the Pharmacy Technician Program at the academy.

After months of learning about pharmaceuticals and medical terminology, Mel proudly donned his cap and gown as he crossed the stage to receive his certification at the academy’s Spring graduation ceremony on March 28, 2024. Surrounded by friends, family, and mentors, he celebrated a significant achievement.

Looking ahead, Mel is eager to embark on this new chapter of his life. He has already landed a full-time position with Walgreens and is ready to make a meaningful impact in the healthcare field.

“I see myself expanding and growing in this career,” he said. “One day, I want to transition into pharmaceutical sales and maybe eventually open up my own business.”
