As Goodwill San Antonio continues to celebrate 80 years of Changing Lives through the Power of Work, October 2025 also marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)—an annual recognition of the positive impact people with disabilities have on the economy and labor market.
NDEAM honors the talent and value that American workers with disabilities add to our workplaces and highlights their achievements both past and present. The national observance falls under the guidance of the U.S. Department of Labor, and this year’s theme, Celebrating Value and Talent, reminds us that the strength of our workforce lies in inclusion.
At Goodwill, creating a culture focused on belonging has been at the heart of our mission since our founding in 1945. What began as an effort to assist veterans who sustained disabling injuries returning from World War II led to the opening of our first store in 1946 with 22 team members—18 of whom were Purple Heart recipients.
Today, our organization employs over 1,800 team members from all walks of life, supporting our commitment to accessibility and inclusion for all.
As a recognized workforce development partner in the region, we take tremendous pride in hiring individuals with disabilities and equipping them with the tools and support needed to thrive—both professionally and personally. Our team members have access to life skills coaching, counseling, professional development, and adaptive equipment. These resources empower them to grow in confidence, perform effectively, and build purpose.
Through our partnership with SourceAmerica and the AbilityOne Program—a federal initiative that connects people with significant disabilities with employment opportunities—Goodwill has extended its impact even further. Today, 87% of our direct labor employees working on federal contracts within our Business Services have a documented health disability. Their ability to deliver mission-critical services to our Department of Defense partners has made our organization more dynamic, empathetic, and connected to the community we serve.
Every day, their contributions demonstrate what’s possible when people are given the opportunity to work. We encourage employers, partners, and community leaders to continue opening doors to people who may be struggling to find meaningful employment, allowing all community members the opportunity to reach their full potential.
