Goodwill San Antonio And Palo Alto College Celebrate America Recycles Day With Student Recycled Fashion Show
(SAN ANTONIO – Nov. 15, 2018)
In celebration of America Recycles Day on November 15th, students attending Palo Alto College in the Intro to Public Relations class hosted the Seventh Annual Recycled Fashion Show on campus at the Student Center Annex. The event, designed to encourage students to upcycle and re-purpose gently used clothing as means to reduce waste, featured runway looks provided by Goodwill San Antonio.
“Goodwill is proud to partner with Palo Alto College to drive campus and community awareness around the many benefits of recycling,” said Penny Benavidez, director of public relations for Goodwill San Antonio. “By supporting the Recycled Fashion Show and the Palo Alto S.H.A.R.E Center, Goodwill is committed to helping students understand that recycling is not limited to simply paper and plastics. Gently-used clothing can be repurposed, and more importantly, used to transform the lives of others within our community.”
Donations provided to Goodwill San Antonio are given a second life that in turn provides a second chance for someone in need in within the San Antonio community. Donations help fund meaningful education, training and career services provided through the non-profit’s Good Careers Academy and Good Careers Centers that empower individuals facing tough circumstances to move out of poverty and into self-sufficiency.
Since January 2009, Palo Alto College has rescued over 500,000 pounds of plastics, glass, metal, paper, and cardboard.
Last year, through focused re-use and recycling efforts, Goodwill San Antonio successfully diverted 15.7 million pounds of unsold items and 2.7 million pounds of electronic equipment from the landfill. More importantly, Goodwill trained more than 740 people for high-demand careers, provided nearly 1,900 placements into employment, and provided college and career readiness to more than 1,800 at-risk youth.
