For 25 Years, She’s Kept Things in Order

By the time the store opens, Vicki is already hard at work. She moves between racks, sorting clothing, straightening hangers, and resetting the fitting rooms before the first customers arrive.

“I have a system here figured out,” she said. “And I stay busy.”

After more than two decades at Goodwill San Antonio, Vicki is a familiar presence at the North Park store.

“I’ve been here at this store for 25 years,” she said. “I’ve been here a long time and I love my job.”

Born in 1965, Vicki experienced a lack of oxygen shortly after birth, resulting in a learning disability. Growing up, her mother encouraged her to keep going and never underestimate herself.

That mindset led her to Easterseals, a nonprofit that provides services and job training for people with disabilities. There, she learned how to interview, build a resume, and develop workplace skills.

In 2001, she was hired at Goodwill San Antonio, where she has worked ever since. “I learn things slower,” she said. “But I still work hard, and I make sure to do my best.”

At 60, Vicki lives independently and keeps a steady routine. She takes the bus to work, completes her shift, and returns home to hobbies like cross stitching and embroidery.

Recently, she completed digital literacy classes through Goodwill’s Training and Development department, where she gained new computer skills and confidence. “I’ve learned so much during this course,” she said.

When asked what advice she would give others with disabilities, her answer is simple. “Don’t give up,” she said. “If I can do it, they can do it.”

This month, Goodwill San Antonio is recognizing team members who have dedicated decades of service to the organization. Vicki is one of them.
