More Than a Job: Larry’s 32 Years at Goodwill

Meet Larry. At 73 years old, Larry still starts his mornings with purpose. Before the summer heat settles in, he’s already outside caring for the grounds at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), helping keep the property clean and welcoming for the people who pass through each day.

For Larry, work has never just been about collecting a paycheck.  “I like staying active,” he shared. “It keeps me going.”

Larry has been part of Goodwill San Antonio for 32 years. His journey began as a security guard at the old Morrison Road store before moving into several different roles across the organization. Over the years, he worked at Kelly Air Force Base, maintaining the grounds, and worked at Brooks Air Force Base before eventually joining the team at SAMMC on Fort Sam Houston.

No matter where he’s worked, Larry has built a reputation as someone who takes pride in doing his work well.

Larry’s supervisor, Luis, says Larry is someone the team can always count on.

“You can always count on Larry to do the job right,” Luis shared. “He takes pride in his work and shows up every day ready to help.”

Today, Larry works alongside a close-knit team of five employees, several of whom have also dedicated more than 20 years to Goodwill San Antonio. Together, they help maintain the hospital grounds and create a welcoming environment for everyone who visits the facility. Even after three decades, Larry says he’s never really felt the desire to leave.

“I’ve always enjoyed what I do,” Larry said. “I just like staying busy.”

Over the years, Larry has watched Goodwill grow and change, but his purpose has remained the same. More than three decades later, he still takes pride in coming to work each day.
