Holiday Clean-Up: No Stress Necessary
Is your house looking like mine? Full of empty boxes from presents that were shipped to me, full of new gifts that need a place, full of stuff that you no longer need?
For me, the holidays are so exciting! A chance to find the perfect gifts to show my love and gratitude to the ones I care about deeply, and to reconnect with family and friends. After the holidays, though, I need some quiet to regroup and refocus. I like to get things put away and organized quickly. Mostly because I'm so excited about all of my new gadgets but also because the "after-math" of having family and friends over to spend time together and open presents can be a bit overwhelming.
As I move through categorizing my new electronics, kitchen appliances, clothes, etc., I tend to find that I don't have enough room to add my new stuff to my current collection. How frustrating! This provokes the desire to weed out some of the older items that I've either lost interest in or have a newer version of. As I go through my existing items I sort into 2 categories: "donate" and "trash." For items such as shoes that may have soles worn out or socks with a hole, I trash it. But for other items that just don't suite me any longer, I evaluate for the donate pile.
I use some of the empty boxes from the holidays to help me separate the items and keep them contained.
When making a donation, most of us want the process to be as easy and convenient as possible. I like to donate items to organizations such as Goodwill, where they always have staff on-hand and ready to help un-load and accept my items. Did you know that Goodwill of San Antonio has 35 different locations across the city where you can drop your donations? Pretty convenient! I also like that no appointment is needed and I can make an itemized list for my records (which I do as I pack the box at home) and ask for a tax receipt. I staple the list to my receipt and place it in my current year's tax folder.
Goodwill also offers home pick-up options in case you decided to get yourself a new gift for Christmas, like a new living room set, reading chairs, or even a toaster oven. I love this! I can contact them to come take my bulky items away AND if I have other smaller items to donate, I just toss those in as well! Talk about easy!
You probably know about some or all of the options I just mentioned BUT did you also know that donating to Goodwill just got THAT much easier? I recently discovered a new platform Goodwill is involved with -- Give Back Box. Goodwill has partnered with several online retailers, including Amazon and Give Back Box to repurpose the boxes you receive when shopping online. After you have separated out your gently used stuff that you no longer want, you can toss them in your empty box (don't forget your itemized list!). Once you have filled your box(es) you can either drop them off at your nearest Goodwill San Antonio Donation Station or visit GiveBackBox.com to print a FREE shipping label. Yes, shipping is FREE for you!
Once you put your address and zip code into the form, you will receive an official shipping label that you can print from home and tape to your box. All that's left to do, is drop the box at your nearest post office! That's IT! You can read more about it on the Goodwill website here: http://www.goodwillsa.org/donate/give-back-box-platform.
Now that you've thrown out and donated the old stuff, you can focus on giving all of your new, awesome stuff the home it deserves. It is so gratifying to see clutter disappear and that sounds like a wonderful feeling to start with in the New Year.
