Volunteer
The gift of your time volunteering to help Goodwill is a treasure we count on every day. Last year, Goodwill was graced by over 10,000 volunteers, which made a tremendous impact on our ability to achieve our mission. Hundreds of volunteers from all walks of life choose to donate their valuable time and talent to Goodwill. Because the Goodwill Stores are open seven days a week (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), there is a time slot for every one.
Because volunteers are for the most part assigned to the Goodwill Stores, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes and working clothes. It is a fun and fast-paced environment! Rarely do volunteers leave without finding a bargain!
High schools, University sororities, fraternities and campus organizations (i.e. Premed Society, Alpha Omega, etc.) choose Goodwill for their community volunteer projects. When volunteer groups organize a project at Goodwill, they do not have to go through the registration process. However, the Director of Public Relations/Volunteers must be contacted ahead of time to approve and schedule the project. We also encourage businesses to organize a volunteer group to participate in the annual United Way’s community-wide Days of Caring that is typically held in late September.
When it comes to volunteering at Goodwill, we have a process to assist individual volunteers and another for larger groups. Please look below for the steps that will assist you in your journey to give back to the community.
Group Volunteers
To arrange a group volunteer effort, simply call 210-924-8581 and ask for Marisela Guillen, Director of Public Relations. We will arrange a day and time that is convenient for your team as well as a rewarding volunteer experience. Volunteers must be at least sixteen years of age.
Court Mandated Volunteers or Other Individual Volunteers
All volunteers must first go through the registration process at our Job Help Centers located in most Goodwill Stores. They are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our downtown Job Help Center located at 406 W. Commerce at Santa Rosa is the only one that is open everyday until 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A photo ID and social security number are essential to the registration. Court assigned volunteers must present a completed referral form before the registration process can begin. A unique number will be assigned to the volunteer.
Volunteers must be at least sixteen years of age. Once the volunteer registration process is complete, volunteers may come into the assigned Goodwill store at their convenience. On some occasions, volunteers who are available on a regular basis during normal business hours can be assigned to tasks in other areas at Goodwill.
We do not set up schedules for our volunteers. We do request that volunteers sign in and out every time they come in through our Biometrics system. This system requests the volunteer’s unique number provided at registration and then processes their hours when the volunteer presents an index finger for fingerprint identification. Volunteers should plan to serve a minimum of two hours and no more than the legal maximum per day. Please plan accordingly, since you must register first at the Job Help Center and then begin your hours as soon as the following day. Since registration requires our system to process the volunteer in our Biometrics system, the service hours cannot begin until the following day.
Since Goodwill is open 7 days a week for extended time periods, our volunteers have the opportunity to serve at a wide range of convenient hours. The key is to register at the Job Help Center first.
