Goodwill assists with a hand up not a hand out. Providing much needed wrap-around services such as Work Supports, Financial Strengthening, Career Progression, and Health and Wellness, Goodwill’s Good Choices programs instill confidence, address needs and focus on skills development that change lives.

Online Community Resource Portal

Through Good Choices, our free online resource portal, community members can access assistance for career, financial, health, and basic needs such as transportation, childcare, and housing. It’s one-stop shopping at its best.

Thanks to our 30+ nonprofit portal partners, members can refer themselves to programs of interest with the single click of a button and receive a follow-up call from the partner agency to learn more about its services and eligibility requirements. They can also obtain information about 90 other community agencies that provide resources for a range of needs.

Education IDA Program

To help community members advance their education and employment opportunities, Goodwill offers the American Dream Education IDA.

Through this program, qualifying participants save $1000 and receive $4000 in match to be used toward accredited degree- or certificate-programs in demand occupations. Funds can be used for tuition, books, supplies, and other allowable school-related expenses, made payable only to the student’s accredited institution of higher education.

To be eligible for the Education IDA, participants must:

  • Be enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited certification or degree program in a demand occupation. For a list of demand occupations within our community, click here.
  • Live in Bexar County
  • Earn no more than 200% of Federal Poverty Level (e.g., $47,700 max for a family of 4)
  • Have a net worth that does not exceed $10,000
  • Complete financial classes (available online or in-person) as well as training on financial aid and other higher education basics
  • Save $1000 over a minimum of 6 months, making deposits of $42 or more each month into an IDA savings account until the $1000 goal is reached
  • Provide data and documentation as may be required to release match funds

Goodwill believes that asset building is the single best way to eliminate poverty in the communities we serve. We offer other opportunities as well, including Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) services that prepare taxes for free, or a savings program that matches your $1 saved with up to $8.

  • Education Assistance

    If you qualify, we can offer $4 in matching savings for every $1 saved towards education expenses. This savings allows you to attend an accredited school/college/university and pay for tuition, fees, books and training-related items. Save a maximum of $250 on your own, and we'll match with a maximum of $750, for a total of $1,000! If you are interested in learning more about this program, contact us.

  • Homebuyer Assistance

    If you qualify, we can offer $4 in matching savings for every $1 saved towards first-time homebuyer expenses. Save a maximum of $1,000 on your own, and we'll match with a maximum of $4,000, for a total of $5,000! If you are interested in learning more about this program, contact us.

    Goodwill has partnered with Accion Texas, a premier microloan lender in the community devoted to creating and sustaining small businesses.
